Are You Happy?

Are You Happy?

What makes you Happy? Think about it. What really makes you Happy? A new car? A new wardrobe? A new friend? Perhaps, a trip out of town? When you think about it there are all kinds of possibilities to “make” us happy. But, with these types of things the “new” usually wears off with time and you are left searching for another “fix” to make you happy.

But, what if you found a way to keep “happiness” within you at all times; no matter the situation, circumstance, or matter? God tells us that there is a way. God teaches us to, “Seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of Heaven and His Righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matt. 6:33 KJV). It is sad how some people simply refuse to accept and apply this most promising Biblical Truth into their lives. Decade after decade passes and they still run after superficial, shallow, external, and trivial objects to make temporary “fixes” of happiness into their lives. It’s like watching a dog chase his own tail…They just keep running around and around without accomplishing what they are running after. But, I have found that there is nothing more satisfying or brings more happiness in life than Seeking and Serving God’s own Son, Jesus Christ.

For me, there’s nothing more fulfilling than sitting on a church pew hearing the Words of God proclaimed and preached from the pulpit. There’s nothing more soothing than singing in sweet harmony the Songs of Zion. There’s nothing more exciting and rewarding than seeing a lost soul surrender his or her life to the Lord. And, what’s so wonderful about this type of happiness? It never fades! And, I don’t have to wait for a new, improved, or updated version…God is the Same, Yesterday, Today, and Forever…His JOYS are never ending and never ceasing and need not be improved upon…When I trust in Jesus I have the real deal forever and forever. (Hebrews 13:8).

Maybe, you are one who attends church on occasion or when the opportunity presents itself. That’s good; but what is better is when you attend church regularly and faithfully (as your physical health allows) and grow in the Lord with other brothers and sisters in Christ. Making your foundation solid, sure, and steady in the Lord promotes God’s Spirit of Joy and Happiness within your heart that even flows over to those around you. Because my husband is a retired Pastor, I have been at the bedside of one who is about to die. I have witnessed both peace and fear in the eyes of the one dying as well as in the eyes of their loved ones and friends. Not once have I ever heard a dying person say, “Oh, I wish I had one more new car.” Or, “I wish I had one more new dress.” Or, “I wish I had taken one more trip.” But, I have heard them say, “Oh, how I wish I had served my Lord better.” That should be the longing of every Christian’s heart…To serve the Lord better.

I believe we discover real, lasting, and satisfying happiness when we seek to Serve our Lord better each and every day; for in doing so we learn that GOD himself brings into our lives those things that HE knows bring about godly happiness. “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness. And, all these things shall be added unto you. Amen…Are you happy today?

Happy, Happy, Happy…

Happy, Happy, Happy…

Phil Roberson, from the cast of Duck Dynasty, has made the phrase, “Happy, Happy, Happy” an overnight sensation among many Americans. But, what is the secret to being Happy, Happy, Happy?

The true secret to happiness; especially for a Believer and Follower of Christ Jesus, is found in TRUST(ing) and OBEY(ing) God. I can remember singing the hymn, Trust and Obey, as far back as I can remember. It was one of Mr. Gear’s, our Sunday School Director, favorite hymns. I think he began practically every Sunday morning by having the entire youth department stand and sing, Trust and Obey. How little did we know from the ages of nine through twelve how important the meaning of those precious words would become in our lives…“Trust and Obey for there’s no other way to be Happy in Jesus, but to Trust and Obey.”

As we get older we somehow get side-tracked into believing that “other” things in life will bring us joy and happiness. But, somewhere along the way we discover that all those “other” things have let us down and the “only” thing that hasn’t let us down is “Trusting and Obeying” Jesus! After we have learned this great life-lesson, we can say with assurance that we are truly Happy, Happy, Happy!

Recently, I have been writing a lesson on God’s Grace. At first, I was really struggling with how to teach and explain the concept of God’s Grace; something so far above our finite minds. God’s Grace is everywhere just like the air we breathe. But, then it dawned on me after days of seeking God’s guidance in the matter that Grace is something we “seek” and “find.” Noah “found” Grace in the eyes of God (Genesis 6:8). After he did, God not only saved him from the pending flood waters upon the Earth, but He saved his entire family. Wow! Now that’s Grace!

Yes; God’s Grace is sufficient, but we must first learn to Trust and Obey Him in order to “find” God’s sufficient Grace within our lives. No amount of struggles, perils, trials, temptations, or battles can escape the powerful force of God’s Grace when we believe and trust that God is doing exactly what God does best…Being God! When we trust God as being God and trust that HE is the Great I Am who has the whole world in His hands only then can we fully know, accept, and understand God’s sufficient Grace…So, in actuality, God’s Grace is found by trusting and obeying…

Oh, how wonderful it is to Trust our Loving God through His Son, Christ Jesus. If you do not know him today, I pray that you will. For in knowing God through His Son, you will find all the Grace you need to make it through this life. Then, you will know what it means to be Happy, Happy, Happy!

Hold to the Rock of Ages…

Hold to the Rock of Ages…

Storms of life and trials that endure for years, some even for decades, can rob us at times of our inward strength, abilities, and energies. The enemy, God’s enemy, begins to believe that he is winning over our “will,” and even God’s will for our life, and that we will eventually become a “quitter” on God. But, God’s children are not “quitters.”

Perhaps, at one point you were strong in the Lord, obedient, determined, dedicated, and totally dependent upon His leading in your life…For years and years you faithfully served God and others in His loving protection, promises, and provisions…But, suddenly, the unseen protective Hands of God seemed to vanish from you life and the enemies’ thunder, lightnings, and clouds were all you could see. At first, you thought the violent storm would eventually pass over; but it didn’t. Instead of passing by, it stopped right over you and stayed much longer than you ever anticipated or prepared yourself for. In the midst of the ongoing storm you tried to find your wits and sense of it all, but they seemed lost in the swelling tides of the storm. After a while, your senses began to dull and you didn’t know how to behave or handle the plethora of emotions that were bombarding your heart and mind practically daily; minute by minute. Somedays you were able to find solace in Prayer and Scripture readings, but then the next day everything is filled with added turmoil and uncertainities…To say the least, the enemy has you on the run…And, it appears to be a “run for your life,” except for one thing…The more you run the more you run into obstacles that hurt and harm you…You know that you need to stand still but standing still in such a strong storm goes against every grain in your mind and body.

The natural voices within tell you to run…It’s the old, “fight or flight” sydrome…By running I mean, “fix it,” “do something,” or, “make it go away.” Even though you know the verse, “Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord,” all too well you still feel the need to “do something,” because if you don’t the storm will overtake your life and “all” will be lost. So, you are in a quandary and nothing in life makes sense to you anymore. And, believe me I know, that when you are experiencing such a long, long lasting storm many of your friends and family will tend to depart…After all, it’s your storm; not their’s…Thankfully, you do experience short, brief periods of “sunshine” when the thunder and lightnings cease momentarily, but when they return they return with a vengence…One minute you are up and the next second you are down being tossed under the raging waters’ currents…No one, and I mean NO ONE, seems willing to throw you a “life- line” of rescue. Most of the people you know are just standing on the sidelines of life shaking their heads in disbelief as they watch you try to balance the strong and ever stronger waves pounding upon the seashore of your battled-life…They don’t want to “see it.” They don’t want to “hear it.” So, they look the other way…To them, it’s just too taxing to watch you endure…

Sadly, those once closest to you start to lose faith in “your faith” and start believing that you are all “washed up.” To them, you are a wreck; a train wreck; a crash; a plane crash…They may even accuse you of being a “nut case.” It appears that All the works and efforts of your past have been destroyed layer by layer…You feel spiritually exhausted, naked, ravished, and ashamed.

Why me, Lord? Why me? You ask yourself over and over…But, wait…Why NOT me? Who am I not to endure such heartaches and trials? Why should I be any different than any other human being on planet Earth who also endures personal trials and defeats at various times within their lives? What team player wins 100% of the time? Who hasn’t thrown a few foul balls in their time or struck out? Who among us is Perfect, let him cast the first stone? Even my own Savior was persecuted, stripped of his garments, and nailed to a Cross…What world do I think I live? Do I wish to live where “all” is happy, happy, happy 24/7? That world does not exist; well, not YET anyway. But, it will one day for those of us who are alive in Christ Jesus! For we will be where He is and we will ALL be happy, happy, happy 24/7…But, until then….we must learn to endure…to carry our own Cross…to know that we know that we know that God is on our side…

With God on our side, and in our hearts, we are more than a conqueror through Him… We can say with full assurance, “I will survive…I will endure…I will see the SONSHINE again upon my life…I will learn to know both defeat and victory as it is appointed unto man to know…Until then, Glory, Glory, and More Glory unto the God who gives and takes away…Praise be unto His Holy Name!”

After the storm passes, and, yes, my friend, it will one day pass…we will rebuild upon the Blessed Rock of Ages…we will cut our losses and we will rebuild…We will survive the many hurricanes, the tsunami, the tornadoes, the floods, and the raging seas with all of its fury to one day stand stronger and taller upon our Foundation of Faith (God’s Faith) not built upon sand, but upon the everlasting, Blessed Rock of Ages! Until then, my heart will go on singing…until then I will Praise His Name…until then I will HOLD TO THE Blessed ROCK OF AGES…Until Then I Will Go to the Rock of Ages! Amen…

Remember, Even in the Storm, God Still Loves You!

Rejoice My Children Rejoice!

Rejoice My Children Rejoice!

Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4

The Hebrew word, “simcha,” means to have “Joy in the most full sense.” In other words, “Be Happy!” In the book of Philippians, we find the Apostle Paul writing to the church at Philippi to, “Be Happy in the Lord!” The thing is that Paul wasn’t telling the church to “be happy” as he was sitting out somewhere on the beach with bright rays of sun shining down on his face with a cool glass of grape juice in his hand…He was telling them to, “be happy,” as he, himself, was sitting in a cold, dark, lonely prison cell facing death. Sure, it’s easy to tell someone to be happy when all around you is at peace and happiness, but can you tell someone to be happy when your cup is running over with stress! That’s exactly what Paul did.

The past few days, actually the past four years, have been stressful at times for my husband and me as we take care of his mother who is suffering from Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Two years ago, we had to admit her into a fulltime nursing home to help with her care. But, even that doesn’t completely erase our concerns, cares, and obligations to her. I continue to do her laundry at least two to three times per week. And, it is very sad watching her decline as she goes from one stage to another. This past week she decided that she doesn’t need to wear her glasses, so she hid them in a bundle of clothes. After searching for them for several days I finally found them wrapped up in a pair of pajamas. When I took them to her, she became quite defensive and insisted that she has never worn glasses her entire life and I could do with them whatever I wished but she would not wear them. So, naturally, not wanting to upset her any further, I brought them home. Since then, her behavior has continued to decline. Some days it nearly seems that it is too much to bear…So, today my husband called me from a funeral he was attending and when I answered the telephone he started singing an old Gospel song, “Rejoice My Children Rejoice!” Truthfully, I didn’t know if I wanted to laugh at his attempt to “cheer” me up, or scream!

But, he was right…The Bible does tell us to, “Rejoice in the Lord.” So, I took a deep breath and said, “God, I really need your strength to continue with all of these issues involving my mother-in-law. And, after a few deep breaths, I could feel my tension leaving being replaced with JOY! I have so much to rejoice about…And, when life is taking a hit at you, we sometimes need to remember to REJOICE just like the Apostle Paul did while incarcerated in prison…

Today, you may be in need of JOY…So, as my husband reminded me today, “Rejoice My Children Rejoice for our names are recorded above…Be glad, exceedingly glad for Heaven is ours today.” Yes, my friend we have a lot to Rejoice about!
