Power in Words

Power in Words

Death and Life are in the power of the tongue…(Proverbs 18:21)

My entire life I have always heard that there is power in the words we speak; negatively or positively.  The older I get the more I find this to be true. The Bible teaches, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” (Luke 6:45 KJV).

Scary; isn’t it?  The words we choose to speak come from either the good or evil that dwells within our heart.  Sadly, our soceity seems to be “cursed” with a “curse.”  In today’s world, both men and women as well as  little boys and little girls now spue forth ramblings after ramblings containing one “curse” word after another.  We our a global soceity filled with profanities!   The Fear of God is truely missing.

Our own nation’s political machine exists of “bashing” the candidates until the last one standing is elected!  Instead of selecting a candidate for his or her good qualities and skills of authenic leadership, we choose the candidate that appears to be the “lesser” of two evils!  We have returned to the jungle’s philosophy that “only the fittest survive.”  But, survive what?  Survive which one can cast the most stones and remain standing!

Last night, the pastor of my church brought a very enlightening message from the Book of Malachi on the Fear of the Lord.  It is found in Malachi, chapter three, verse 16:  “Then, they that feared the LORD spake (words spoken) often one to another; and the LORD hearkened, and HEARD it, and a BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.”

Did you see that? A BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE… Wow!  The Lord writes down the words of those that “fear” him and speak often one to another…What are we speaking?  Words of Praise, Thanksgivings, and Encouragements from God’s word!  Verse seventeen of Malachi goes on to read, “And, they (the ones that Fear God) shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day (day of judgment) when I make up my jewels (He is calling his Saints who fear God his jewels!); and I will spare (deliver) them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.”  Yippee! Praise the Lord!

Amazing.  You may be tempted, as we all are from time to time, to “join” in soceity’s craving for one curse word after another as well as one negative bashing after another… But, rebuke the temptation to do so in the name of Jesus and pray for his Grace and Mercy to be applied to your heart.  May our hearts bring forth good fruit.

In today’s world, one cannot even watch a decent movie with their family without certain words spueing forth like gang-busters!  If this is all Hollywood writers can write…we are in bad need of new and better writers!  When I was in the classroom teaching students, I often told them that a person who uses “curse” words and “profanity” to describe every situation in their life tends to have a very limited vocabulary!  Let’s face it…Hollywood and much of soceity has a very “limited” vocabulary!!!

Another point in closing is this…Since the Bible teaches that God has a Book of Remembrance dedicated to the Good Words of those that “fear” him and “speak often one to another,” won’t it be sad to discover that some people who say they are followers of Jesus Christ won’t have one single word recorded in the Book of Remembrance… because they chose rather to speak both negatively and disrespectfully; dishonoring and not fearing God?

I don’t know about you, but this makes me want to speak more positive and good words in the Name of the Lord…Won’t it be grand when God, himself, opens His Book of Remembrance and reads something that you or I have spoken in honest and sincere Fear and Reverance unto God…one to another??!!

It’s a choice of the heart…Death and Life are in the power of the tongue… Choose wisely…

Remember, God Loves You!
