“Pass the Sugar, Dear!” Many years ago, on one of the episodes of the Andy Griffith Show, Sheriff Andy Taylor had to deal with a married couple that argued constantly. Their screaming and yelling at one another irritated the neighbors, so Sheriff Taylor was called in to help. After observing the couple, Sheriff Taylor decided to give them a lesson on how to communicate properly without arguing, screaming, or yelling.
So, Sheriff Taylor had the argumentative couple to politely sit down at the dining room table to practice using good table manners. He showed them how to say things like, “please,” and “thank you” during their conversation and to always look at one another when speaking and to smile sweetly.
Well, you guest it….it didn’t work! Before the meal was finished the couple was saying all the right words…but choosing an acute tone of resentment such as, “Pass the sugar…Dear!” Finally, Andy gave up. He couldn’t change their behavior. He began to realize that the couple’s former ways of communicating was their “own” way of expressing their true, authentic feelings one for another….In other words, they enjoyed the arguing, screaming, and yelling!
Isn’t that true for us when we view and compare ourselves to the Words of God? We enjoy our ways of living. We don’t want to change. We form habits, patterns, rituals, and routines that identify who we are.. And, when someone tries to interfere with how we do things, we get annoyed and want to retreat to our “old” ways of doing things.
But, God is not anything like Sheriff Andy Taylor. He doesn’t give up or give in to our ways and demands of “self-sufficiencies.” His Holy Spirit continues to woo, convict, correct, and intercede in our lives until we have learned to use God’s mannerisms in all things; and not our own. “And, whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” (Colossians 3:23 KJV).
God wants us to get into the “habit” and life-style of doing ALL as unto Him. That would certainly change a lot of our ways; don’t you think!
Aren’t you glad that God never gives up on us? I know I am. And, today as the song says, “He’s Still Working on Me…To make me what I ought to be…It took Him just a week to make the moon and the stars, the sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars…How loving and patient He must be…He’s still Working on Me!”
God is all about changing our hearts, attitudes, mind-sets, and lives. He is preparing each of us to become more Christ like. We are called to be His witnesses…Witnesses to the Works of the Lord in our own lives. I’m so glad that He’s still working on me.
So, the next time we want to yell out, “Pass the sugar…Dear!” Remember, God’s not going to give up on us as easily as Andy! Andy Taylor was a fictional character, playing a fictional sheriff, in a fictional town! Believe me….there’s is NOTHING fictional about our God! He’s almighty and He’s real…And, when we surrender our hearts and lives unto Him….He immediately starts to work on us…to make us to be what He wants us to be! Amen…
Remember, God Loves You!
