It is written in the Bible, in the Book of John 19:30, that the last words spoken by Christ Jesus before his death on the Cross were, “It is Finished.” As we all know the word, “finished,” means nothing else added to it…complete and done. Our salvation is completed and done through the “finished” works of Jesus Christ. I heard a sermon this past Sunday where the preacher said, “Jesus plus NOTHING equals EVERYTHING!” Amen. But, there is one thing that you might not know. If you have ever studied the Old Testament, especially the Book of Leviticus, you learn about the different offerings that God required of the Israelites. These different offerings each represented a different type of sacrifice made unto a Holy God. Moving forward two thousand years to the New Testament, we learn that Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God, met all the requirements for each of these five different offerings through his sacrificial life, death, burial, and resurrection. The Israelites offerings were clearly a “pre-view” of the final and “finished” offering that God, himself, would offer through the death, burial and resurrection of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Our atonement for sin. But, what you might not know is that after the Burnt Offering, one of the Old Testament offerings, had been completed, sacrificed and offered unto the Old Testament priest, it would burn all night long on the brazen altar (the place of sacrifice). In the morning, after the offering had burned all night (this is why it was called the Burnt offering), it was the job of the Priest to collect the ashes from the Burnt offering, place them beside the altar, change their priestly garments, then take the ashes outside the camp to a clean place (Leviticus 6: 8-13). Hebrew tradition states that when the last of the ashes fell, the Priest would jubilantly shout, “It is Finished!” Amazing. The same three last words spoken by our eternal sacrifice, Christ Jesus! Today, aren’t you glad that we, as Christians (followers of Jesus Christ) do not have to get up every single morning, select a male animal without blemish, and take it to a Priest for the sacrifice of our daily sins and to make restitution between us and God, our Creator! Jesus plus NOTHING equals EVERYTHING. Everything you and I need to have peace with God was completed and finished at Calvary. Today, there is no more sacrifice for sin. Jesus paid the price; by Faith he is our daily offering unto God. God provided His own male, without spot or blemish, as our eternal sacrifice; his only begotten Son. Today, you might be struggling with sin in your life. What is sin? Sin is any act, conduct, thought, imagination, deed, or action that opposes a Holy God; our Creator. Since Adam, the first man God created, committed such an act of disobedience against God by not obeying His command to Not Eat of the Tree of Knowledge, of Good and Evil, Adam sinned against God. Adam was then no longer at “peace” with God. Restitution had to be made. So, God made the first sacrifice when he, himself, killed an animal to use its skin to make clothing for both Adam and Eve; since their eyes were now open unto their nakedness, as well as to sin. From that time on, to the present day, every human is born under the penalty of sin and needs a sacrifice to restore peace with God. Yet, today, we are no longer required to bring our own sacrifice daily unto God. Why? Because of God’s supreme sacrifice made for all mankind through His own Son, Jesus Christ. Today, by faith, we can accept God’s sacrifice and be at peace with God forever and forever and forever. I am so glad and thankful that Jesus proclaimed, “It is Finished!” No more sacrifice….for Jesus is our finished Sacrifice. Today, if you have never accepted God’s sacrifice for sin, I invite you to do so. If you have a Bible somewhere around you, read in the Book of Romans, chapter ten, regarding how you can open up your heart and let Jesus be your eternal, finished sacrifice unto God. For it is written, “For WHOSOEVER shall call upon the Name of the Lord (Jesus Christ) shall be Saved.” (Romans 10:13 KJV). Yes, today IT is FINISHED; no more burnt offerings, no more sin offerings, no more guilt offerings, no more grain offerings, and no more peace offerings. All of our offerings were made complete (finished) unto God through Jesus Christ….plus nothing….equal Everything! Amen.
Remember, God Loves You!
